After a car accident or any accident for that matter, you may feel that you do not need medical attention. However, many symptoms of serious neck injuries can feel like “normal” discomforts. These injuries can often be thought of as “to be expected” after an accident. Do not fall into this trap. Injuries, especially neck injuries, can take weeks to manifest. If you write off your immediate symptoms, you may find yourself in pain at a later date. You may be in need of medical attention. also, You may end up having no recourse for reimbursement.
In our previous blog, we explored back and spinal injuries. We discussed the warning signs your body will give you when something is wrong. In this blog, we will address neck injuries and their signs. If you feel any of these, seek medical attention immediately.
Neck Injuries Types
- Neck strain
- In an accident, your neck muscles can be stretched, pulled, and torn. The result is pain and stiffness that belongs in the whiplash injury family.
- Neck sprain
- Similar to a neck strain, this is stretching, tearing, and pulling of ligaments in the neck. Again, pain and stiffness are the unpleasant results.
- Pinched nerve
- If a disc is ruptured in the neck or a bone spur is created, nerves running down your arms and legs can get irritated or pinched. A pinched nerve will result in pain or numbness in the skin and muscles of the nerve’s destination – often arms and hands.
- Herniated disc
- There are discs between each of the bones in your spine, and they serve as shock absorbers. If too much pressure is put on them, they can rupture or slip. The resulting pressure on your spine causes pain, numbness, and weakness in the neck and back.
